50 Important Turkish Verbs – 1

Here are the most common Turkish verbs for beginners:

Yapmak
To do, to make

Word Example

Annem bana kek yaptı.

My mom made me a cake.

Gitmek
To go

Word Example

Her gün yürüyerek okula gidiyorum.

Every day I go to school walking.

Gelmek
To come

Word Example

Dün akşam teyzem evimize geldi.

Last evening my aunt came to our house.

Olmak
To be

Word Example

Büyüyünce doktor olacağım.

I’m going to be a doctor when I grow up.

Almak
To buy, to receive

Word Example

Ahmet arkadaşından hediye aldı.

Ahmet received a present from his friend.

Vermek
To give

Word Example

Dilenciye 10 lira verdi.

He gave the beggar 10 liras.

Sevmek
To love

Word Example

Yavru pandaları çok severim.

I really love baby pandas.

Uyanmak
To wake up

Word Example

Selin her sabah saat 8’de uyanır.

Selin wakes up every morning at 8 o’clock.

Uyumak
To sleep

Word Example

Cenk derste hep uyur.

Cenk always sleeps in class.

Yemek
To eat

Word Example

Öğle yemeğinde hamburger yedim.

I ate hamburger at lunch.

Duymak
To hear

Word Example

Dışarıda kuşların ötüşlerini duydum.

I heard the birds chirping outside.

Konuşmak
To speak

Word Example

Çok iyi Türkçe konuşuyorsun!

You speak really good Turkish!

Demek
To say

Word Example

Ceylan “bana kalemini versene” dedi.

“Give me your pen” said Ceylan.

Söylemek
To tell

Word Example

Ceylan ona kalemini vermesini söyledi.

Ceylan told him to give his pen to her.

Anlatmak
To tell, To explain, To narrate

Word Example

Babam bana bir hikaye anlattı.

My father told me a story.

Susmak
To be quiet

Word Example

Lütfen susar mısın?

Could you please be quiet?

Görmek
To see

Word Example

Eve dönerken bir tavşan gördüm.

I saw a rabbit while returning home.

İzlemek
To watch

Word Example

Ablam televizyon izliyor.

My sister is watching television.

Bakmak
To look

Word Example

Genç adam güzel bayana baktı.

The young man looked at the pretty woman.

Okumak
To read

Yatakta uzanmış kitap okuyor.

She’s reading a book while lying on the bed.

Çizmek
To draw

Word Example

Küçük kız çok güzel resim çiziyor.

The little girl is drawing a really pretty picture.

Yazmak
To write

Word Example

Öğretmen tahtaya soru yazıyor.

The teacher is writing a question on the board.

Kullanmak
To use

Word Example

Adam kılıcı ustaca kullandı.

The man skillfully used the sword.

İstemek
To want

Word Example

Ne yemek istiyorsun?

What do you want to eat?

Dilemek
To wish

Word Example

Kayan yıldızı görünce dilek dilemeye başladı.

Seeing the shooting star, he started wishing.

Koymak
To put

Word Example

Çayı oraya koyma.

Don’t put the tea there.

Hatırlamak
To remember

Word Example

Dün akşam gördüğün rüyanı hatırlıyor musun?

Do you remember your dream from last night?

Unutmak
To forget

Word Example

Bu günü hiç unutmayacağım.

I’m never going to forget this day.

Tutmak
To hold

Word Example

Atlamadan önce elimi sıkıca tut.

Tightly hold my hand before we jump.

Bırakmak
To release

Word Example

Çocuk annesinin elini bırakıp koştu.

The child released his mother’s hand and ran.

Başlamak
To start

Word Example

Sınava saat 9’da başladı.

The exam started at 9 o’clock.

Bitirmek
To finish

Word Example

Yaşlı adam sonunda maratonu bitirdi.

The old man finally finished the marathon.

Denemek
To try

Word Example

Bebek ilk kez yürümeyi denedi.

The baby tried to walk for the first time.

Bulmak
To find, To attain

Word Example

Aradığı aşkı buldu.

He found the love he was looking for.

Kaybetmek
To lose

Word Example

Müzik festivalinde arkadaşımı kaybettim.

I lost my friend at the music festival.

Dinlenmek
To rest

Word Example

Çok yoruldum, biraz dinlenelim.

I’m really tired, let’s rest a little.

Ara vermek
To take a break

Word Example

Ders çalışmaya ara verdim.

I took a break from studying.

Öğrenmek
To learn

Word Example

Araba sürmeyi öğrendim.

I learned how to drive.

Öğretmek
To teach

Word Example

Sana resim çizmeyi öğreteyim mi?

Shall I teach you how to draw?

Hareket etmek
To move

Word Example

Araba kendi kendine hareket ediyor!

Your car is moving on its own!

Koşmak
To run

Word Example

Oğlan kıza doğru koştu.

The boy ran towards the girl.

Yürümek
To walk

Word Example

Her gün 2 kilometre yürürüm.

I walk 2 kilometers every day.

Durmak
To stop, To halt

Word Example

Motosiklet kırmızı ışıkta durdu.

The motorbike stopped at the red light.

Girmek
To enter

Word Example

Görevliler haricinde kimse giremez.

No one except employees can enter.

Çıkmak
To exit

Word Example

Labirentten çıkmak için sağ dön.

Turn right to exit the labyrinth.
